What is Mammography?
Mammography is an extremely important radiological examination, as it shows the breast tissue in detail. The two main types include:
- Conventional mammography, which provides two-dimensional images of the breast tissue.
- Digital Mammography, which uses digital technology for improved image resolution and storage.
What is Tomposynthesis?
Tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography, improves the detail of the imaging. The system captures multiple images from different angles, allowing detailed examination of breast tissue. This significantly reduces the chance of not detecting small tumours, offering greater diagnostic accuracy.

Why are mammography and tomosynthesis important?
Early detection of breast cancer
Mammography and tomosynthesis effectively detect breast cancer at an early stage, increasing the chances of successful treatment and reducing the need for more invasive treatments.
Anomaly Assessment
Doctors use these tests to evaluate abnormalities detected either through self-examination or during clinical examination. The images provide valuable information for making appropriate decisions about further investigation or treatment.
Follow-up After Treatment
Women who have completed their treatment for breast cancer continue to be followed up through mammography and tomosynthesis, so that any recurrences can be detected early and appropriate interventions can be recommended.
When the Exams Should be taken
Mammography
- Women 40-49 years old: Each woman should discuss with her doctor the appropriate time to start regular mammograms.
- Women 50-74 years old: Mammography is recommended every two years.
- Women at increased risk: Those with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors may need to start mammograms earlier and more frequently.
Composition
Tomosynthesis is used as a complementary test to digital mammography, particularly for women with dense breasts, because it helps detect tumours that may not be seen with conventional mammography.

How is the examination at the Diktaion Medical Center?
Preparation
On the day of the test, women should avoid using deodorant, powder or lotion, as these can alter the image and cause diagnostic confusion.
Conduct of the Examination
The doctor carefully places the patient’s breast between two plates and applies gentle but necessary compression for a few seconds to obtain clear images. During the tomosynthesis, the machine captures multiple images from different angles, creating a detailed and multi-dimensional view of the breast tissue.
Results
Our specialized doctors analyze the images accurately and inform the patient immediately about the findings. If further testing or therapeutic intervention is required, we provide clear instructions for the next steps.
